Regenerative therapies form a core part of Andrew’s practice specifically PRP and N-stride. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections are used to relieve the symptoms of persistent and on-going tendon pain, the platelets and plasma are believed to have natural healing properties that encourage the damaged tendons to repair and heal themselves. They may do this by stimulating the production of collagen, which is an important component of tendon and ligament tissue.
The N-stride injection is used to treat osteoarthritis of the hip and knee and was developed to provide relief from pain without surgery. It has been shown to be most effective in people with mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the hip and knee with the benefits of pain relief, reduction in stiffness and inflammation, restored mobility and flexibility and an improvement in cartilage health.
Andrew has a specialist interest in minimally invasive hip and knee surgery and in addition to performing robotic assisted joint replacement surgeries, he is a firm believer in 3D printed patient customised iTotal Conformis knee implants which are individually designed and manufactured for you, providing a perfect, customised fit that mimics the natural shape of your knee. An implant that is sized and shaped to your precise measurements allows more natural, pain-free movement of the joint. Patients experience less pain after surgery and there is less wear and tear on the implant, meaning that it may last longer. More of the patient’s own healthy bone and ligaments can be preserved and, over time, it is hoped that individuals who have a customised knee replacement experience more stability and more function in the knee.
With increasing numbers of people participating in a wide range of sporting activity Andrew dedicates a significant amount of his private practice to lower limb sporting injuries encompassing a comprehensive review of the whole weight bearing lower limb. Injuries to the pelvis, hip and knee are common and there are various treatment options available. It’s important to understand that a sports injury can lead to chronic problems if left untreated. Common sports injuries include strains and sprains, knee ligament injuries, swollen muscles, shin splints and fractures. For further reading please see the Sports Injury & Performance blogs at Carrothers Orthopaedics.
With an ongoing research portfolio covering basic science and clinical practice, Andrew has collaborated in studies with university departments and orthopaedic companies. He has a significant academic interest and as CI of NIHR AceFIT Feasibility RCT (management of elderly acetabular fractures) was awarded a £250,000 NIHR grant with an additional £100,000 industry funding secured.
Andrew has over 80 peer-reviewed publications and he lectures nationally and internationally on a wide range of joint replacement and trauma reconstructive topics. He is a Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon in the Royal Army Medical Corps. For further information on his publications please search “Andrew Carrothers” on Google Scholar.
